Virginia Tech ~ Wake Forest University - School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences

Applying to the VT-WFU School of Biomedical Engineering & Sciences (SBES)

Important Note - Location Alert . . . .

The SBES program is a collaborative effort between three major academic entities; Virginia Tech's College of Engineering, the VA-MD Regional School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. It is very important for applicants to realize that the first two are located in Blacksburg, Virginia, while the third is about 122 miles away in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There are, therefore, two separate campuses involved in this program. When you apply you need to carefully research your options and decide what particular biomedical specialty area you wish to study, since that decision can affect the choice of campus. On the CollegeNet online application you will be asked to indicate your campus choice, and you will be required to name that location more than once.

On the CollegeNet Application form . . .

When you go to the VA Tech Graduate School website to begin your online application, one of the first questions asked concerns your choice of campus location. In the drop-down list of campus locations given, you will not see Wake Forest  as an option.  You will have to choose “Blackburg (main)” as your campus choice.   The “More Info” button beside the question gives more information.

However, further down in the application you will find a section entitled “Biomedical Engineering Supplemental Application Form”.  This part was created specifically by the department and here again, you will be asked to identify your special area of interest and the campus on which you want to be based.  Here you can indicate Wake Forest if that is your choice.  Additionally, you could choose “Either” if you wish.   Be sure, however, that you’ve ‘done your homework’ and you know where the research and/or professors in your interest area are located.

SBES provides four main concentration areas in which students can focus their academic and research pursuits: Biomechanics, Cell and Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Imaging, and Medical Physics. Currently the Medical Physics option is primarily located only on the WFU campus.  In order to decide which campus you prefer based on your research interests, you must explore other sections of the website to find the pages describing individual faculty and various specialty research labs.   This will help you with your decision regarding location. While it is important (and desirable) for you to decide on campus location from the beginning, keep in mind that it is always possible to make a campus change later on in your program, if you and your committee deem it advisable or necessary.
