Virginia Tech ~ Wake Forest University - School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences

Application Procedures. . .

All Biomedical Engineering applicants are required to submit applications to Virginia Tech regardless of the campus chosen. It is strongly recommended that you apply online through the CollegeNet service offered by the Graduate School. Your application will be secure, it can be done in several sittings before being submitted, it arrives immediately, and processing will begin with receipt of the application fee. The Graduate School’s website (http://www.grads.vt.edu) has detailed information on the application process. Under certain circumstances paper applications can be requested from gradrecr@vt.edu or from the Graduate Admission Office at Wake Forest, but we do not encourage this because it is a much slower and more cumbersome process.

Only complete applications will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. A complete application consists of the following items:

A completed online application
Application Fee of $45.00
Official Transcript(s)
Official TOEFL scores (if required)
Official GRE scores
Three (3) letters of recommendation

The above items are the minimal requirements for application. Some applicants also like to include supplementary materials such as a Statement of Purpose, a resume, certificates of publication in journals, etc. If you choose to do this, be sure that you send them to the Graduate Admissions office of SBES, not to the Graduate School.

See "Application Items:  Details About...." for a more detailed discussion of application items.

What NOT to Send to SBES:

Do not send any secondary school or junior (community college) records or transcripts. The committee only evaluates bachelor’s degree-level work or higher. Community college credits are usually transferred into another full university system, and would therefore appear on those transcripts. Do not send copies of diplomas, certificates of completion, etc. unless they refer to B.S. or higher level work. Do not send books or bound copies of publications. Also, if you are an international applicant, do not send financial certification documentation and/or immigration-related materials. They need to go straight to the Graduate School.

The Process in Summary: How it Works

The Graduate School holds your application until all the items it requires (plus any requirements requested by the department, such as GRE scores) arrive. It then notifies the department that the application is complete from its standpoint, and assessment/decision paperwork is sent to the department. Meanwhile, the department is waiting for and/or downloading its application items in order to complete the entire application packet. When the packet is complete, it goes to the Admissions Committee on both campuses for evaluation. When a decision is rendered, the Graduate School notifies the student by mail.

**Note that in order to comply with security regulations and protect your privacy, the department will NOT give out status information by phone or email. You can go to the website where you applied and obtain access to your record to check on the status of your application (see Graduate School directions).
