The Center for Injury Biomechanics of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine together with the Baptist Hospital level 1 trauma center is one of the 6 operating Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN) centers in the United States. CIREN is a multi-disciplinary approach to crash analysis where medical doctors and engineers analyze injuries caused by vehicle accidents to determine causes and mechanisms of injury. As stated on the National Highway Traffic Administration's (NHSTA) website, the mission of CIREN is "to improve the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of motor vehicle crash injuries to reduce deaths, disabilities, and human and economic costs."
