Choosing a Campus

Blacksburg Campus

Wake Forest Campus

SBES is a unique collaboration between the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Virginia Tech.  Wake Forest University School of Medicine is at the Winston-Salem campus while Virginia Tech is at the Blacksburg Campus.  You will be asked to pick a “home campus” at which you will reside, but you will have the opportunity to take courses from faculty at both campuses, and to participate in cross-disciplinary research projects which span both campuses.

Following are some frequently asked questions about choosing a campus:

How do I choose a home campus?

Do students commute back and forth between the two campuses?  How does that work?

How do I designate my choice of campus on the application form?

Do I have to choose a campus when I apply?  What if I would be happy working at either campus?

What is life like in Blacksburg?

What is life like in Winston-Salem?

How do I choose a home campus?
The best strategy is to make your choice based upon either your specialty area of interest and/or a particular faculty member that you would like to work with.   Click here to get an idea of what our faculty are working on, or here to learn more about our research areas.   While most students make their choice based on a research interest, some students make their choice based upon a geographical preference for either Blacksburg or Winston-Salem.

Do students commute back and forth between the two campuses?  How does that work?
No, students do not commute between campuses – there is 122 miles between them.  Students choose a “home campus” where they wish to be based.  This choice is generally made based on the student’s specialty area of interest and/or desired faculty association.  However, most of our courses are taught by video-broadcast, so the students at both locations are being taught “together”.  Additionally, there are opportunities for students at each campus to visit the other; for example, to participate in special activities like research symposiums.

How do I designate my choice of campus on the application form?

At the beginning of the online application you will be asked to designate a campus choice using a drop-down menu.  All SBES applicants must choose “Blacksburg (Main)” as an answer for this question since Wake Forest is not listed as a campus choice.  HOWEVER, on page 6 of the application which is the Biomedical Supplemental Form you will be asked about your campus choice again.  Here you may indicate “Blacksburg (VT)”, “Winston-Salem (WFU)”, or “Either”.  This ‘second entry’ of campus choice is the one we will be processing.

Do I have to choose a campus when I apply?  What if I would be happy working at either campus?

If you would like to considered for enrollment at either campus, just select ‘Either’ campus on your application form.  This will give you the largest potential selection of potential advisors and research opportunities.
