Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) and the Virginia Tech – Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES) have awarded 2 Pilot Grants to SBES and CCC faculty members.  Each award is in the amount of $25,000.  The first project, entitled "EphrinA 1-Targeted Nanocarriers for Intracellular Co-Delivery of FdUMP[10] and Phospholipid Gemcitabine to Glioblastoma Cells via the EphA2 Receptor", is led by Justin Saul as Principal Investigator, and Greg Kucera, Yongwoo Lee, William Gmeiner, and Waldemar Debinski as co-investigators.  The first project, entitled "Cancer Therapy through Irreversible Electroporation Enhanced with Carbon Nanotubes", is being led by Rafael Davalos as Principal Investigator, and Suzy Torti, John Robertson, and Nichole Rylander as co-investigators.

Virginia Tech – Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences faculty members, Dr. Joseph Freeman and Dr. Rafael Davalos, have each received an “Early Career Translational Research Award in Biomedical Engineering”  from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation.

The 7th Annual SBES Graduate Student Research Symposium was held May 8, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Nichole Rylander has been named the recipient of the 2008 Outstanding New Assistant Professor in the Virginia Tech College of Engineering.  Dr. Rylander holds appointments in both Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at Virginia Tech.

2008 Torgersen Graduate Student Research Excellence Award Recipients
SBES students Satyaprakash Karri, John Charonko, and Steve Rowson have been named recipients of the 2008 Torgersen Graduate Student Research Excellence Awards Program held April 9, 2008.  The Torgersen award recognizes outstanding research efforts by Virginia Tech graduate engineering students at the MS and PhD level.   More than 60 abstracts were submitted and the judges reviewed posters and oral presentations from the finalists.  4 of the 6 oral presentation awards were won by SBES students or SBES Biomedical Option students.  5 of the 6 poster awards went to students advised by SBES core faculty.

Professor Kevin Davy has been elected a fellow of the American Heart Association and the Council of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism.  Dr. Davy is an Associate Professor of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and director of the Human Integrative Physiological Laboratory at Virginia Tech.

Lockhart, Associate Professor and his Locomotion research has been featured in media outlets around the world of late. This research commonly "falls" within an area called, "slips, trips and falls".

Irreversible Electroporation, developed by Dr. Rafael Davalos, was one of seven technologies highlighted in the article, "2007: The Year in Technology," in NASA's Tech Briefs.

Scott Gayzik has been awarded the 2007 Stapp Car Crash Conference Best Student Paper for his paper entitled "A Finite Element-Based Injury Metric for Pulmonary Contusion:  Investigation of Candidate Metrics through Correlation with Computed Tomography”.   Scott is a PhD student in SBES at Wake Forest University and is a student in the VT-WFU Center for Injury Biomechanics.  His advisor is Dr. Joel Stitzel.

Gregory Webster has been awarded the 2007 John D. States Best Student Paper prize by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM).  Greg presented his paper entitled "Feasibility of Transdermal Ethanol Sensing for the Detection of Intoxicated Drivers” at the AAAM 2007 conference in Melbourne, Australia.   Greg is a PhD student in SBES at Virginia Tech and the VT-WFU Center for Injury Biomechanics.  His advisor is Dr. Clay Gabler.

Kerry M. Link, M.D. was one of 25 professionals recognized in RT Imaging – “Top 25 Most Influential” September 3, 2007 publication.  Dr. Link is the Director for the Center for Biomolecular Imaging at Wake Forest University Health Sciences, and Professor of Radiology.

Eric Kennedy has been awarded the American Society of Biomechanics, 2007 Pre-Doctoral Young Scientist Award.  Eric is a PhD student in SBES at Virginia Tech and the VT-WFU Center for Injury Biomechanics.  His advisor is Dr. Stefan Duma, Director of the Center for Injury Biomechanics.

Chris Wyatt, Paul Laurienti and Bob Kraft have been awarded a driving biological project grant through the UCLA Center for Computational Biology, one of the NIH National Centers for Biomedical Computing. This 3 year project will develop and apply algorithms for computational neuroanatomy in subjects with leukoaraiosis to identify age-related changes in cognitive function. Students Win 1st Place in International Design Competition
A team of Wake Forest University School of Medicine graduate students have won first place in an international safety technology design competition at the 20th Enhanced Safety of Vehicles Conference held in Lyon, France.

Amber Rath Bonivtch has been awarded the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Graduate Teaching Fellowship.  The Graduate Teaching Fellowship Program is a collaboration between ASME and mechanical engineering departments to encourage outstanding doctoral candidates in Mechanical (and related) Engineering, particularly women and minorities, to pursue careers in engineering education. Amber is a PhD student in SBES and the VT-WFU Center for Injury Biomechanics.  Her advisor is Dr. Joel Stitzel.

Dr. H. Clay Gabler has been awarded SAE's Ralph H. Isbrandt Automotive Safety Engineering Award in recognition of his research in far side crash protection.  The award was presented in recognition of the paper, "Side Impact Injury Risk for Belted Far Side Passenger Vehicle Occupants". The Isbrandt award, established in 1975, recognizes the most outstanding paper at an SAE International meeting on the subject of automotive safety engineering.

Layne T. Watson was presented the 2007 Dean's Award for Excellence in Research from the College of Engineering.
Watson is a professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics, and the director of the Laboratory for Advanced Scientific Computing and Applications.

Daniel Kim-Shapiro, professor of physics at Wake Forest University, recently received a MERIT Award from the National Institutes for Health to continue his pioneering research on sickle-cell anemia.

Douglas Gabauer has been awarded a 2007 Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship.  The Eisenhower Fellowship was awarded to Doug by the Federal Highway Administration in recognition of his research contributions to highway safety. Doug is a PhD student in SBES at Virginia Tech and the VT-WFU Center for Injury Biomechanics. His advisor is Dr. Clay Gabler.

Eric Kennedy has been awarded the 2007 VT College of Engineering Torgersen Award for PhD Research.  
Eric won 1st Place in the Oral Presentation Competition for his talk entitled "The FOCUS Headform for Eye and Face Injury Prevention" . Eric is a PhD student in SBES and the VT-WFU Center for Injury Biomechanics.  His advisor is Dr. Stefan Duma, Director of the Center for Injury Biomechanics.

Kerry M. Link, M.D. was elected as a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Link is the Director for the Center for Biomolecular Imaging at Wake Forest University Health Sciences, and Professor of Radiology.

Federal Intelligence Award Goes to Persons
WFU Medical Engineering graduate Timothy Persons (SBES PhD, 2001) received a Director of National Intelligence Fellows Award, a $200,000 grant, for his US intelligence research. Dr. Persons performed his imaging science research in the Department of Radiation Oncology under Dan Bourland, PhD, and is the technical director for the Disruptive Technology Office within the US National Intelligence Office.  For more information click here.

Dr. Kevin Davy has been elected Fellow of the American Heart Association and Council on High Blood Pressure Research.  Dr. Davy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise and an Affiliate faculty member in SBES at Virginia Tech.

Ge Wang was elected Fellow of the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) for his pioneering contributions to bioluminescence tomography (BLT) and x-ray computed tomography (CT).  Ge is an Endowed Professor and the Director of the Biomedical Imaging Division, VT-WFU School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES).

SBES was a proud sponsor of www.controltheshow.com created by SBES Graduate student Benjamin Sintay. The Control the Show is a unique Christmas display which allows anyone in the world with a computer connection to log on and control the lights at the Sintay home. 2006 was a great year and we look forward to 2007.
